Giant's Ring

Sightseeing attraction | Belfast | Northern Ireland | United Kingdom

The Giant's Ring is an impressive prehistoric monument near Belfast, Northern Ireland. It is a type of henge dating back to the Neolithic period, built around 2700 BC, making it older than the Egyptian pyramids. The monument consists of a circular earthwork about 180 meters in diameter, surrounded by an earth wall approximately 3.5 meters high. Within this circle is a small passage grave with a west-facing entrance.

The exact function of the Giant's Ring has not been fully determined to this day. It is believed to have served as a gathering place or memorial for the dead. Archaeological excavations suggest that the passage grave at the center is older than the surrounding earth wall, indicating that the site was used and developed over a long period of time.

In the 18th century, the Giant's Ring was used for horse racing, demonstrating that the site also played a role in later epochs of societal life. Today, the Giant's Ring is a protected historical monument and a popular destination for visitors interested in early Irish history. Its impressive size and well-preserved passage grave in the center make it a fascinating testament to the Neolithic culture on the island.

Walk my dog and other dogs I own over the years...pity to see these paid unregulated dog walkers with 4 plus dogs wrecking it...

I grew up here, and the place has not changed in 45 years. Nearly 5000 years old and four laps are exactly a mile, this place is special and great for dog walking.

It's a shame about the graffiti on the stones themselves, but an amazing site There was a sign saying keep dogs on your lead but there were dogs everywhere. Was surprised by the amount of people on a Tuesday mid morning, goes to show the site is well used

Nice for a dog walk. I was expecting a Stone Henge style and size but it is still nice. Great views into the county

A humongous cairn / passage tomb in the middle of a giant earthen ring mound. My wife, daughter enjoyed visiting the tomb as well as walking along the earthen mound. It was very tranquil. People had their dogs out enjoying the space. It is surrounded by beautiful countryside. No tickets needed.

Es un lugar muy bonito e impresionante. Pensar que fue construido hace millones de años no deja indiferente. Además, no hay mucha gente y el aparcamiento es gratis!!

Interesting ancient stone burial site with large ring rampart. Great to walk around, although watch out for the rabbit holes which could catch your foot badly. Good access and free car park. Part of the Lagan Valley footpath network.

Absolutely in my top 5 circles, although it can't beat waffles or donuts sadly, it's a very strong contender for 3rd best though, fun to walk around and through it.
